June 2017 Activity Report

Details of Meetingsy

A meeting of the Technical Committee on Nonlinear Systems and Control was held on December 13, 2016 in CDC 2016. Nine people attended. Update of TC members and activities during the six-months were reported. Possible cooperation between this committee and IFAC Technical Committee of Non-Linear Control Systems was discussed. The status of updating the TC Web site was reviewed. TC members were asked to submit update of their information if necessary, including research keywords. Ideas of posting useful information on the web site for TC members as well as non-experts and normal people were exchanged. The members were encouraged to continuously pursue possibilities to organize invited sessions, special issues and workshops in major IEEE conferences, IFAC and other meeting sponsored or cosponsored by IEEE. It is approved unanimously that this TC will continue to nominate AEs for CEB. There were no opinion about the IEEE initiative of IoT. As a general policy, all participants agreed with the idea of being inclusive instead of exclusive.

Membership

The TC has currently 40 members in total. The TC welcomed one new member in this period. Hiroshi Ito continues to serve as Chair for 2017.

Awards and Recognition

Graziano Chesi was nominated as a Fellow of IEEE. Kristi Morgansen was appointed to the US Defense Sciences Study Group.

Activities

A member gave a plenary talk in AC3E Summer Workshop on Automatic Control.

Conference and Workshops

A member is acting as a program co-chair for hosting MTNS 2018. Other TC members are chairs and members of committees for major conferences such as IEEE Conf. Decision and Control, American Control, and Control and the IFAC World Congress.

Invited Sessions

Several members organized invited sessions in IEEE sponsored or cosponsored meetings such as IEEE Conf. Decision and Control, IEEE Int. Conf. Control and Automation, Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, Chinese Control Conference, SICE Annual Conference. Some members proposed open invited tracks in IFAC World Congress.

Journal Special Issues

We have not yet reached any concrete plan of proposing a journal special issue in the near future.

Information of TC members in the roster was updated. New information of events and useful links were added. Information about research interests of TC members were also updated.

Wikipedia

We are still looking for volunteers in the TC for checking and editing pages of related topics in Wikipedia.

December 2016 Activity Report

Details of Meetingsy
A meeting of the Technical Committee on Nonlinear Systems and Control was held on July 8, 2016 in 2016 ACC. Nine people attended. Activities over six-months and the update of TC members were reported briefly. The column of the TC published in CSM was also reported. The status of updating the TC Web site was reviewed in view of the number of requests from TC members who asked the chair to update their information such as keywords and changes of affiliations. Ideas of posting useful information on the web site for TC members and non-experts were exchanged. The members were encouraged to continuously pursue possibilities to organize invited sessions, special issues and workshops in major IEEE conferences, IFAC and other own local occasions. A member was nominated as a CEB associate editor, and it was indicated that the TC will try to nominate one again in the future if CEB recruits its members. The IEEE initiative of IoT discussed in the preceding TAB meeting was reported. Ideas of possible actions for the Wikipedia project were discussed.

Membership

The TC has currently 39 members in total. The TC welcomed four new member in this period. Hiroshi Ito continues to serve as Chair for 2017.

Awards and Recognition
Andrew Teel received the 2016 IFAC Technical Committee on Nonlinear Control Systems Achievement Award. Luca Zaccarian was nominated as a Fellow of IEEE. Norobu Sakamoto received the H. Kimura award from SICE.

Activities
Murat Arcak gave a plenary lecture at the 10th IFAC Symposium on Nonlinear Control Systems. Jie Huang gave a keynote lecture at 2016 Symposium on Guidance and Control of Uncertain Multi-Agent Systems. Lu Liu gave a keynote lecture at TCCT Workshop on Cooperative Control and Multi-Agent Systems. Rodolphe Sepulchre gave a Plenary talk at Congreso Nacional de Control Automatico 2016. Rodolphe Sepulchre gave a talk in 2016 ACC Workshop.

Conference and Workshops
A member acted as the editor and a co-chair for hosting the 10th IFAC Symposium on Nonlinear Control Systems. Another member is acting as a program co-chair for hosting MTNS 2018. Other TC members are chairs and members of program committees of major conferences such as the 20th IFAC World Congress, European Control Conference 2016 and the 10th IFAC Symposium on Nonlinear Control Systems.

Invited Sessions
Members of this TC organized invited sessions in IEEE CSS meetings and major meetings in the area of control such as Input to State Stability and its Variants, and Control of Monotone Systems at IEEE CDC 2016, and Wind Utilization and Real-Time Nonlinear Guidance Strategies in Presence of Wind at IEEE Aerospace Conference 2016. A member proposed an open invited track titled Advances in Nonlinear Observers in the 20th IFAC World Congress. Some examples of other invited sessions organized by members of this TC in smaller international meeting such as the 2016 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics and SICE Annual Conference 2016.

Journal Special Issues
We have not yet reached any concrete plan of proposing a journal special issue in the near future.

Wikipedia
We started looking for volunteers in the TC for checking and editing pages of related topics in Wikipedia.

Other Activities

June 2016 Activity Report

Summary
The Technical Committee on Nonlinear Systems and Control aims to advance the development of nonlinear systems and control theory and promote its practical applications. A TC meeting was held at CDC 2016, and ideas for promoting nonlinear systems and control both among our research community and our community at large. The committee meeting was held jointly in series with the IFAC Technical Committee of Non-Linear Control Systems and strengthened an effective relationship between the two committees. Members of this TC continued to be active in their activities that contribute to the mission of this IEE CSS TC. Those activities during the last six months after the previous report are summarized below.

Membership
The TC welcomed a new member. In total the TC has currently 35 members. Zongli Lin stepped down as Chair, and Hiroshi Ito was appointed as Chair from January, 2016.

Awards and Recognition

Invited Sessions
Members of this TC organized invited sessions in IEEE CSS meetings and major meetings in the area of control such as Lyapunov Tools for ISS and Stabilization at IEEE CDC 2015, Stochastic Hybrid Systems at IEEE CDC 2015, Analysis and Control of Monotone Systems at IEEE CDC 2015, and Distributed Control of Complex Multi-Agent Systems, IEEE CDC 2015 at Neuronal Behaviors: A Control Perspective, IEEE CDC 2015. TC members also proposed invited sessions such as Input to State Stability and its Variants for IEEE CDC 2016, Nonlinear Time Delay Systems: Theory and Applications for IEEE CDC 2016 and invited sessions such as IEEE ICCA16, IEEE/ASME AIM 2016 and CCC 2016.

Conferences and Workshops
A member of this TC organized a workshop entitled Nonlinear Optimal Control: Stable Manifold Approach at IEEE CDC 2015, and another member will organize a workshop at CCC 2016. Some members organized international workshops in their areas such as Fukuoka Workshop on Nonlinear Control Theory 2015.

TC Webpage
The TC webpage has been updated with new information of events and useful links. Information about research interests introducing individual TC members have been strengthened.

Other Activities
A column for the Control Systems Magazine has been written for describing the aims and the activities of this TC.

December 2015 Activity Report

A small group of the committee had an informal meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, in June, during the 1st IFAC Conference on Modelling, Identification and Control of Nonlinear Systems (MICNON-2015).  We discussed ideas for promoting nonlinear systems and control both among our research community and our community at large.

During this reporting period, several new members have joined the committee. The roster of the committee members on the TC’s website is up to date. A LinkedIn group called “IEEE Nonlinear Systems and Control” was created. Currently, there are 41 members in the group. Committee members continued to be active in their activities that contribute to the mission of the committee.  The page EVENTS on the TC website that lists the upcoming conferences and workshops stayed updated.

I will step down as the Chair of the committee in 2016, and will continue to be active as a committee member. 

June 2015 Activity Report

The committee met in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday, December 6, 3:00-4:00pm, during the 2014 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control.  We discussed ideas for promoting nonlinear systems and control both among our research community and our community at large. There will be an informal meeting among those who attend the 1st IFAC Conference on Modeling, Identification and Control of Nonlinear Systems (MICNON-2015), Saint-Petersburg, Russia, June 24-26, 2015.

During this reporting period, several new members have joined the committee. The roster of the committee members on the TC’s website is up to date. Committee members continued to be active in their activities that contribute to the mission of the committee. The November 2014 TC report have been uploaded to the TC website. The page EVENTS on the TC website that lists the upcoming conferences and workshops stayed updated.

The committee met in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, June 5, 4:00-5:00pm, during the 2014 American Control Conference. Seven members of the committee (Frank Allgower, Graziano Chesi, Jie Huang, Hiroshi Ito, Hassan Khalil, Zongli Lin, Amit Sanyal) attended the meeting. We discussed ideas for promoting nonlinear systems and control both among our research community and our community at large. Our next meeting has been tentatively scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday, December 16, 3:00-4:00pm, during the 2014 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control.

June 2013 Activity Report

The committee will meet in Washington, DC in June during the 2013 American Control Conference.

The committee has held a joint meeting with the IFAC Technical Committee on Non-Linear Control Systems at CDC 2012 in Maui. We discussed a range of issues related to a better collaboration between the two committees.

The committee sponsored an organized session “Boundless approaches to nonlinear dynamics” at SICE 13th Annual Conference on Control Systems, Fukuoka, Japan, March 5-8, 2013. There were 47 participants at the session.

I have started building the website for the committee. A roster of the committee members have been created on the website. The development of the website will be discussed at the June meeting in DC.
